About Ad Astra

Ad Astra follows an astronaut who ventures into space in search of his lost father, whose obsessive quest to discover intelligent alien life at all costs threatens the Solar System and all life on Earth.

Oblivion (2013)
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Oblivion is a post-apocalyptic science fiction film starring Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Melissa Leo. It was released in the year 2013.
Oblivion focuses on a lone maintenance technician who has almost completed his mission on an Earth completed decimated from an alien war. Completely alone, or so he thought, the maintenance tech discovers woman who survived when her space ship crashed into earth. Together, they do what they can to survive and along the way they discover the truth behind the war with the aliens.
Approaching the Unknown (2016)
Written and directed by Mark Elijah Rosenberg, Approaching the Unknown is a science fiction drama movie starring Mark Strong, Luke Wilson and Sanaa Lathan. It was released in the year 2016.
Approaching the Unknown follows Captain William Stanaforth, an astronaut who is on a one-way mission to Mars, in a solo spacecraft. Turns out he’s come up with a formula that could aid in bringing water back to Mars. Along the way, however, he encounters all sorts of equipment malfunctions. Making the journey to Mars seem absolutely perilous.
Gravity (2013)
Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, Gravity stars Sandra Bullock and George Clooney. It was released in the year 2013.
One of the great science fiction movies like Interstellar, Gravity follows astronaut Dr Ryan Stone who is on her first mission and gets hit by the debris of a destroyed spy satellite which causes her craft to be destroyed and leaves her with the doomed task of trying to find a way back to earth.
High Life (2018)
Directed by Claire Denis, High Life is a science fiction horror movie starring Robert Pattinson, Juliette Binoche, André Benjamin, Mia Goth, Agata Buzek, Lars Eidinger, Claire Tran, Ewan Mitchell, Gloria Obianyo, Victor Banerjee, Scarlette Lindsey and Jessie Ross. It was released in the year 2018.
High Life is about a group of prisoners who are sent on a mission to space with the aim to harvest an alternative energy source from a black hole. On the way, Scientist Dibs experiments on the prisoners as she’s obsessed with delivering a child in space. An obsession which is exacerbated when sex between the prisoners is strictly prohibited.
Moonfall (2022)
Co-written and directed by Roland Emmerich, Moonfall stars Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu, Donald Sutherland, and Carolina Bartczak. It was released in the year 2022.
Moonfall follows two former astronauts alongside a conspiracy theorist who discover the hidden truth about Earth’s moon when it suddenly leaves its orbit. Despite the incredible cast and visual effects, Moonfall was an absolute flop but it’s certainly worth a watch if you’ve got a lazy afternoon planned.
First Man (2018)
Directed by Damien Chazelle, First Man is a biographical drama movie starring Ryan Gosling, Claire Foy, Jason Clarke, Kyle Chandler, Corey Stoll, Christopher Abbott and Ciarán Hinds. It was released in the year 2018.
First Man follows Neil Armstrong and the people around him as he enters the NASA program. The movie follows the interpersonal drama leading to Armstrong eventually joining the Apollo 11 mission and being the first man to set foot on the moon.
Stowaway (2021)
Directed by Joe Penna, Stowaway is a science fiction thriller movie starring Anna Kendrick, Daniel Dae Kim, Shamier Anderson and Toni Collette. It was released in the year 2021.
Stowaway follows the mission of the spacecraft MTS-42, a two year mission, bound for Mars. Unfortunately for the crew aboard, a stowaway is found shortly after take-off. This presents a moral conundrum when the systems aboard the craft begin to malfunction - creating a dire situation for everyone on board.
The Midnight Sky (2020)
Directed by George Clooney, The Midnight Sky stars George Clooney, Felicity Jones, David Oyelowo, Tiffany Boone, Demián Bichir, Kyle Chandler, and Caoilinn Springall. It was released in the year 2020.
The Midnight Sky is about an aging scientist (played by George Clooney) who must travel across the Arctic Circle to warn away a returning interplanetary spaceship following a global catastrophe on Earth.
Spaceman (2024)
Directed by Johan Renck, Spaceman is sci-fi drama movie starring Adam Sandler, Carey Mulligan, Kunal Nayyar, Lena Olin, Isabella Rossellini and Paul Dano. It was released in the year 2024.
Spaceman follows Jakub Procházka, a Czech astronaut on a solo mission to explore a mysterious interstellar cloud near Jupiter. Facing extreme isolation, his journey takes a strange turn when he encounters an alien entity named Hanuš, a giant spider-like being that engages him in philosophical discussions about life, guilt, and ambition.
The Martian (2015)
Directed by Ridley Scott, The Martian stars Matt Damon, Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Jeff Daniels, Michael Peña, Kate Mara, Sean Bean, Sebastian Stan, Aksel Hennie, and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It was released in the year 2015.
The Martian is about an astronaut marooned on Mars and his desperate attempts to try and survive long enough for NASA to rescue him. It’s one of the all time greats of survival science fiction.
Slingshot (2024)
Directed by Mikael Håfström, Slingshot is a science fiction movie starring Casey Affleck, Laurence Fishburne, Emily Beecham, Tomer Kapon and David Morrissey. It was released in the year 2024.
Slingshot follows astronaut John on a dangerous mission to Saturn’s moon, Titan, alongside Captain Franks and engineer Zoe. As the crew debates executing a risky slingshot maneuver around Jupiter, John faces paranoia, memory lapses, and disturbing hallucinations. Which begins to take its toll as he starts to have a mental breakdown.
Life (2017)
Directed by Daniel Espinosa, Life is a sci-fi horror movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Rebecca Ferguson, Ryan Reynolds, Hiroyuki Sanada, Ariyon Bakare and Olga Dihovichnaya. It was released in the year 2017.
Life follows the six-member crew of the International Space Station, who discover evidence of a new life-form. However, the unknown lifeform appears to be far more intelligent and dangerous than they first suspected. Pretty soon, they end up in a fight for their lives!
The Cloverfield Paradox (2018)
Directed by Julius Onah, The Cloverfield Paradox stars Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Elizabeth Debicki, Aksel Hennie, Daniel Brühl, Chris O’Dowd, John Ortiz, David Oyelowo, and Zhang Ziyi. It was released in the year 2018.
One of the great science fiction movies like Interstellar, The Cloverfield Paradox is part of the Cloverfield franchise and functions as a prequel of sorts. As it introduces to an earth running out of power and an outer space science experiment by way of a particle accelerator which is designed to create limitless energy for the earth to use. Instead, it opens up portals to multiple parallel dimensions which allows for alien horrors to come through. Alien horrors which we saw in the original Cloverfield film.
The Creator (2023)
Directed by Gareth Edwards, The Creator is a sci-fi action movie starring John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson and Allison Janney. It was released in the year 2023.
Set in the year 2055, The Creator depicts a world where an US government created AI detonates a nuke over LA which leads to the entire western world banning all AI to prevent this ever happening again. However, governments in Southeast Asia ignore this and eventually a new robotic lifeform (a "simulant") called 'Alphie' is developed - meaning that Western Forces are going to try and track down Aphie to kill it. This movie questions what is real and what isn't when Alphie becomes self aware and starts to display human characteristics.
Arrival (2016)
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Arrival stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Tzi Ma. It was released in the year 2016.
Arrival follows Louise Banks, a linguist enlisted by the United States Army to discover how to communicate with extraterrestrials who have arrived on Earth.
