What’s supposed to be harmless fun turns dark fast when Katie vanishes without a trace. The rest of the crew starts seeing freaky visions and slipping into paranoia, convinced Slender Man’s coming for them next. Things spiral out of control, but instead of a pulse-pounding thrill ride, you’re left with a flick that’s more dull than disturbing.
Sinister (2012)
Directed by Scott Derrickson, Sinister is a supernatural horror movie starring Ethan Hawke, Juliet Rylance, Fred Thompson, James Ransone, Clare Foley and Michael Hall D'Addario. It was released in the year 2012.
Sinister is a nerve-shredding descent into madness that grips you and never lets go. It follows a washed-up true-crime writer, Ellison Oswalt, who's desperate for his next big hit. Moving his unsuspecting family into a murder house, he stumbles upon creepy home movies showing previous families being slaughtered in gruesome ways. Digging deeper, he unearths the presence of Bughuul, a demonic figure, who feeds on the fear and corruption of children. The more obsessed Ellison becomes, the closer the danger creeps toward his family. To some horror fans, Sinister is pure nightmare fuel.
Lights Out (2016)
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Lights Out is a supernatural horror movie starring Teresa Palmer, Gabriel Bateman, Alexander DiPersia, Billy Burke and Maria Bello. It was released in the year 2016.
Lights Out follows Rebecca and her younger brother Martin as go up against a terrifying entity named Diana. A being who only appears in the dark and which has a disturbing connection to their mother, Sophie. Bit by bit, the family is plunged into chaos as Rebecca discovers Diana's origins and fights to protect her family by keeping the lights on. Lights Out is eerie and the scares are inventive but it also explores themes of trauma, and mental illness.
Rings (2017)
Directed by F. Javier Gutiérrez, Rings is a supernatural horror movie starring Matilda Lutz, Alex Roe, Johnny Galecki, Aimee Teegarden, Bonnie Morgan and Vincent D'Onofrio. It was released in the year 2017.
Rings follows Julia heads to her boyfriend Holt’s college where a creepy science experiment is being run by Professor Gabriel. In which students watch Samara’s infamous death tape and pass the curse along to dodge the seven-day death sentence. But when Julia watches it, things go insane and she sees footage no one else has seen which lead to Samara’s dark origins. Because in this sequel, the curse isn’t just alive - it’s ready to evolve.
The Grudge 2 (2006)

Dead Silence (2007)
Directed by James Wan, Dead Silence is a supernatural horror movie starring Ryan Kwanten, Amber Valletta, Donnie Wahlberg and Bob Gunton. It was released in the year 2007.
Dead Silence follows Jamie Ashen, whose wife is murdered, following the delivery of a creepy ventriloquist’s doll. Jamie decides to return to his hometown where he learns the bizarre legend of Mary Shaw, a woman who was executed by hanging, and who silences her victims by ripping out their tongues. Soon enough, Jamie discovers a startling revelation, linking him to the vengeful spirit of Mary Shaw.
The Curse of La Llorona (2019)
Directed by Michael Chaves, The Curse of La Llorona is a supernatural horror movie starring Linda Cardellini, Raymond Cruz and Patricia Velásquez. It was released in the year 2019.
The Curse of La Llorona follows social worker, Anna Tate-Garcia, who investigates a case involving a family being haunted by a malevolent spirit. A spirit which is revealed to be La Llorona aka "The Weeping Woman." Seeking more children to claim as her own, Anna gets caught up in helping the family fight of the Weeping Woman and the curse they're swept up in.
Don't Knock Twice (2016)
Directed by Caradog W. James, Don't Knock Twice is a supernatural horror movie starring Katee Sackhoff, Lucy Boynton, Javier Botet, Nick Moran and Richard Mylan. It was released in the year 2016.
Don't Knock Twice follows Jess, a recovering mother and her daughter Chloe, who are being haunted after knocking on the door of a cursed house. They find out this occurrence is tied to a witch legend and bit-by-bit they begin to uncover the dark history of the witch, Mary Aminov, and proclivity for practicing black magic and abducting children.
The Unholy (2021)
Written and directed by Evan Spiliotopoulos, The Unholy is a supernatural horror movie starring Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Katie Aselton, William Sadler, Diogo Morgado, Cricket Brown and Cary Elwes. It was released in the year 2021.
The Unholy follows journalise Gerry Fenn who uncovers a supposed miracle when a deaf-mute girl, Alice, claims to have been visited by the Virgin Mary and has been gifted the ability to heal the sick. While pilgrims flocked to be blessed by Alice, Gerry discovers Alice's abilities come from a witch, Mary Elnor, who was executed centuries ago and is manipulating Alice to try and spread her malevolent influence. Thus begins a showdown between Gerry and the witch.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It (2021)
Directed by Michael Chaves, The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It is a supernatural horror movie starring Vera Farmiga, Patrick Wilson, Ruairi O'Connor, Sarah Catherine Hook and Julian Hilliard. It was released in the year 2021.
The Conjuring: The Devil Made Me Do It follows Ed and Lorraine Warren as they investigate the case of Arne Johnson, who claims he was demonically possessed when he killed his landlord. The Warrens eventually discover there's a sinister curse linked to an occultist using satanic rituals. Resulting in a confrontation when Lorraine helps Ed destroy the the occultist's alter and break the curse that has Arne in its grips.
The Boogeyman (2023)
Directed by Rob Savage, The Boogeyman is a supernatural horror movie starring Sophie Thatcher, Chris Messina, Vivien Lyra Blair and David Dastmalchian. It was released in the year 2023.
The Boogeyman follows a malevolent haunting two sisters and their emotionally distant father who are dealing with the trauma of their recently deceased mother and wife. The creature specifically targets the two sisters as it feeds on their trauma and fear which eventually causes them to fight through their anxieties and fight for survival against the Boogeyman in their home.
Tarot (2024)
Directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, Tarot is a supernatural horror movie starring Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley, Avantika, Wolfgang Novogratz, Humberly González, Larsen Thompson, Olwen Fouéré and Jacob Batalon. It was released in the year 2024.
Tarot follows a group of college friends who, after finding an old cursed tarot deck, perform readings on each other and unwillingly seal each other's fates. As they try to destroy the deck they also fight to survive the spirit that haunts the curse deck of cards.
Annabelle: Creation (2017)
Directed by David F. Sandberg, Annabelle: Creation is a supernatural horror movie starring Stephanie Sigman, Talitha Bateman, Lulu Wilson, Anthony LaPaglia and Miranda Otto. It was released in the year 2017.
Annabelle: Creation is set in The Conjuring universe and is a prequel to the 2014 film 'Annabelle.' It follows the parents of Annabelle, a girl who died in an accident years earlier, who have opened their home to orphaned girls. Eventually it's discovered that Annabelle's mother, Esther, has been attempting to communicate with Annabelle's spirit using dark occultic rituals. This brings forth a demonic entity which possesses a doll and unleashes terror on the unsuspecting orphan girls. Eventually, leading to who or what becomes the Annabelle doll as featured in the other Conjuring universe films.
Ouija: Origin of Evil (2016)
Co-written and directed by Mike Flanagan, Ouija: Origin of Evil is a supernatural horror movie starring Elizabeth Reaser, Lulu Wilson, Annalise Basso and Henry Thomas. It was released in the year 2016.
Ouija: Origin of Evil is a prequel to 'Ouija' and is set in the year 1965. It follows Doris who uses a Ouija board and becomes possessed by a spirit named Marcus. As her family begins to discover the dark powers of the board they struggle to save Doris from this evil entity.
Incantation (2022)
Directed by Kevin Ko, Incantation is a Taiwanese supernatural horror movie starring Tsai Hsuan-yen, Huang Sin-ting, Kao Ying-hsuan, Sean Lin and RQ. It was released in the year 2022.
Incantation follows a woman who struggles to protect her daughter from a curse tied to a forbidden ritual she performed year earlier. The woman, Li, discovers the horrifying consequences of the occult ceremony through a found-footage tape which documents when the vengeful spirit was released. With time running out, Li races to save her daughter and break the curse before it kills them both.
Hereditary (2018)
Directed and written by Ari Aster, Hereditary stars Toni Collette, Alex Wolff, Milly Shapiro, Ann Dowd, and Gabriel Bryne. It was released in the year 2018.
Hereditary is a psychological horror film that focuses on Annie Graham and her family when they first attend the funeral of Annie's mother. Unable to deal with the grief, she joins a support group and one of the members indicates that a seance might be the answer to deal with some unresolved issues. As the film progresses it becomes more and more apparent to Annie and her family that their house may be a site for Occultist practice and worship. This, of course, leads to all sorts of bizarre scenarios and possessions along the way.
