About Edge of Tomorrow
Directed by Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, and Brendan Gleeson. It was released in the year 2014.
Edge of Tomorrow is about Major William Cage and his skirmish against a group of aliens that the human race is at war with. During this skirmish he’s exposed to some alien tech which causes him to relive every aspect of this war in some bizarre sci-fi version of this Groundhog Day story.

1. Oblivion (2013)
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Oblivion is a post-apocalyptic science fiction film starring Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Melissa Leo. It was released in the year 2013.
Oblivion focuses on a lone maintenance technician who has almost completed his mission on an Earth completed decimated from an alien war. Completely alone, or so he thought, the maintenance tech discovers woman who survived when her space ship crashed into earth. Together, they do what they can to survive and along the way they discover the truth behind the war with the aliens.
2. Moonfall (2022)
Co-written and directed by Roland Emmerich, Moonfall stars Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Michael Peña, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu, Donald Sutherland, and Carolina Bartczak. It was released in the year 2022.
Moonfall follows two former astronauts alongside a conspiracy theorist who discover the hidden truth about Earth’s moon when it suddenly leaves its orbit. Despite the incredible cast and visual effects, Moonfall was an absolute flop but it’s certainly worth a watch if you’ve got a lazy afternoon planned.
3. The Tomorrow War (2021)
Directed by Chris McKay, The Tomorrow War is a science fiction movie starring Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, J. K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson and Edwin Hodge. It was released in the year 2021.
The Tomorrow War follows Dan Forester, who gets drafted, to fight in a future war against aliens called White Spikes. Teaming up with his brilliant future-daughter Muri and a group of underprepared recruits, Dan helps create a toxin to kill the aliens. But the real fight happens when back in the present, he and his estranged dad head to a frozen Russia to wipe out the alien threat before it even begins.
4. The Creator (2023)
Directed by Gareth Edwards, The Creator is a sci-fi action movie starring John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson and Allison Janney. It was released in the year 2023.
Set in the year 2055, The Creator depicts a world where an US government created AI detonates a nuke over LA which leads to the entire western world banning all AI to prevent this ever happening again. However, governments in Southeast Asia ignore this and eventually a new robotic lifeform (a "simulant") called 'Alphie' is developed - meaning that Western Forces are going to try and track down Aphie to kill it. This movie questions what is real and what isn't when Alphie becomes self aware and starts to display human characteristics.
5. Ad Astra (2019)
Written and directed by James Gray, Ad Astra stars Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Ruth Negga, Liv Tyler, and Donald Sutherland. It was released in the year 2019.
Ad Astra follows an astronaut who ventures into space in search of his lost father, whose obsessive quest to discover intelligent alien life at all costs threatens the Solar System and all life on Earth.
6. Infinite (2021)
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Infinite is a sci-fi action movie starring Mark Wahlberg, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sophie Cookson, Jason Mantzoukas, Rupert Friend, Toby Jones and Dylan O'Brien. It was released in the year 2021.
Infinite follows a schizophrenic man named Evan McCauley who gets arrested after forging a katana for a local gangster. When a man at the police station claims they've known each other for centuries, a woman by the name of Nora busts in the room and helps him escape. Evan eventually learns that there are 500 forever-beings known as Infinites who can remember all their past leaves that are split into two groups: the Believers who want to make the world a better place and the Nihilists who want to destroy the world. It's a race against all odds as Evan learns he's part of the Believers and that they must recover an Egg-shaped doomsday weapon before the Nihilists can use it to destroy the world.
7. Source Code (2011)
Directed by Duncan Jones, Source Code is a science fiction movie starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Michelle Monaghan, Vera Farmiga and Jeffrey Wright. It was released in the year 2011.
Source Code follows U.S. Army Captain Colter Stevens, who is sent into an eight minute virtual reality recreation of a train explosion. During this “mission,” he’s tasked with trying to identify the terrorist responsible. It’s an action sequence Groundhog Day which challenges the concept of reality as it requires multiple attempts to unmask the bomber.
8. Enders Game (2013)
Directed by Gavin Hood, Ender’s Game stars Asa Butterfield, Harrison Ford, Ben Kingsley, Viola Davis, Hailee Steinfeld, and Abigail Breslin. It was released in the year 2013.
Ender’s Game is a futuristic science fiction movie about a gifted child who is sent to military academy as everyone prepares an upcoming alien invasion.
9. Alita: Battle Angel (2019)
Directed by Robert Rodriguez, Alita: Battle Angel stars Rosa Salazar, Christoph Waltz, Jennifer Connelly, Mahershala Ali, Ed Skrein, Jackie Earle Haley and Keean Johnson. It was released in the year 2019.
Alita is a battle cyborg who is revived by Ido, a doctor, who realises that she actually has the soul of a teenager. Alita then sets out to learn about her past and find her true identity. Meanwhile, just like all good dystopian hellscapes, there’s the constant looming threat of augmented human-cyborgs and evil corporation to keep Alita busy.
10. Transcendence (2014)
Directed by Wally Pfister, Transcendence is a science fiction thriller starring Johnny Depp, Morgan Freeman, Rebecca Hall, Kate Mara, Cillian Murphy, Cole Hauser and Paul Bettany. It was released in the year 2014.
Transcendence follows Dr. Will Caster, a scientist who researches the nature of sapience and artificial intelligence. He and his team work to create a sentient computer; he predicts that such a computer will create a technological singularity, or in his words "Transcendence". His wife, Evelyn, is also a scientist and helps him with his work.
What follows is Dr Caster being pursued by the anti-technology terrorist group known as R.I.F.T. and eventually the FBI. As they both seek to control the Artificial Intelligence he created.
11. Mortal Engines (2018)
Directed by Christian Rivers, Mortal Engines is a post-apocalyptic steampunk film starring Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan, Hugo Weaving, Jihae, Ronan Raftery, Leila George, Patrick Malahide, and Stephen Lang. It was released in the year 2018.
Mortal Engines is set more than a thousand years in the future in a post-apocalyptic world where these steampunk-looking gigantic mega cities known as “Predators” are mobile and spend their time looking to attack and consume other cities that are smaller than them for fuel and resources.
The city of London is on a rampage consuming all in its wake and apprentice historian Tom Natsworthy will do whatever he can to ensure no more innocents get hurt.
12. The Adam Project (2022)
Directed by Shawn Levy, The Adam Project is a science fiction action movie starring Ryan Reynolds, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, Walker Scobell, Catherine Keener and Zoe Saldaña. It was released in the year 2022.
The Adam Project follows fighter pilot Adam Reed, from a dystopian future of 2050, who steals a time jet to escape back to 2018 to save his wife from the evil Sorian. He teams up with his younger self, and the two of them do what they can to fight off Sorian, who seeks to control all timelines.

Written and directed by Luc Besson, Lucy is a science fiction action movie starring Scarlett Johansson, Morgan Freeman, Choi Min-sik and Amr Waked. It was released in the year 2014.
Lucy follows a woman who gains telekinetic, telepathic and mental time travel abilities when a large quantity of an experimental psychedelic drug is accidentally absorbed into her bloodstream. What follows is a mission to stop the company responsible who is experimenting on pregnant women in order to develop the drug. The closer she gets to the answers she seeks the more she transforms into something much more than human.
14. Elysium (2013)
Directed by Neill Blomkamp, Elysium stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura, and William Fichtner. It was released in the year 2013.
Elysium follows a futuristic earth which is overpopulated and disease ridden while the rich and 1%ers live on the space station called Elysium which orbits around the earth. With this plot point, Elysium explores many themes including classism, immigration and even healthcare.
15. The Day The Earth Stood Still (2008)
Directed by Scott Derrickson, The Day The Earth Stood Still is a science fiction action movie starring Keanu Reeves, Jennifer Connelly, Jaden Smith, John Cleese, Jon Hamm and Kathy Bates. It was released in the year 2008.
The Day The Earth Stood Still depicts an alien named Klaatu who is sent to earth to try to change human behaviour to try to change humanity’s current path towards its own self annihilation.
16. Passengers (2016)
Directed by Morten Tyldum, Passengers stars Jennifer Lawrence, Chris Pratt, Michael Sheen, Laurence Fishburne, and Andy García. It was released in the year 2016.
Passengers is more of a romantic science fiction movie which borders on abuse when a lone survivor on a transport ship in the middle of a 100 year journey decides to wake up a fellow passenger out of suspended animation because he’s fallen in love with her. However, in doing so he dooms her to a meaningless death on this spaceship in the middle of its maiden voyage. When she finds out the truth she lashes out but not before the degradation of the ship itself forced them to work together to make repairs and save the other passengers still in suspended animation.
17. Tenet (2020)
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Tenet stars John David Washington, Robert Pattinson, Elizabeth Debicki, Dimple Kapadia, Michael Caine, and Kenneth Branagh. It was released in the year 2020.
Tenet is a science fiction film which challenges the normal flow of the space time continuum. In Tenet, the viewer is drawn into the world of a former CIA agent who learns how to weaponise time itself and prevent attacks from the future. And in true Christopher Nolan form, there’s plenty of clever camera tricks that will make you feel like you’re the one travelling through time and on mind altering substances. This film is peak Nolan creativity.
18. Ready Player One (2018)
Directed by Steven Spielberg, Ready Player One stars stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. It was released in the year 2018.
Ready Player One focuses on a futuristic world where most of humanity uses a virtual reality simulation called The Oasis. However, it is run by an evil corporation who wants to profiteer from the players. The plot focuses on a teen orphan (played by Tye Sheridan) who discovers clues to a contest which promises the winner total control and ownership of The Oasis.
19. Arrival (2016)
Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Arrival stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner, Forest Whitaker, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Tzi Ma. It was released in the year 2016.
One of the great science fiction movies like Interstellar, Arrival follows Louise Banks, a linguist enlisted by the United States Army to discover how to communicate with extraterrestrials who have arrived on Earth.
20. Extinction (2018)
Directed by Ben Young, Extinction is a science fiction action film starring Michael Peña, Lizzy Caplan, Mike Colter, Amelia Crouch, Erica Tremblay, Israel Broussard, Lex Shrapnel, and Emma Booth. It was released in the year 2018.
Extinction focused on the character Peter, who is an engineer that lives an relatively uneventful life, and has nightmares of the end of the world. One day these alien looking shock troops descend from the skies and start slaughtering everyone in the streets.
I won’t ruin the ending but suffice to say the “humans” start to fight back until Peter makes a startling discovery about the “aliens” that are slaughtering everyone, his family and his friends. Trust me when I say you won’t see the twist coming.
21. The Colony (2013)
Directed by Jeff Renfroe, The Colony is a post-apocalyptic science fiction film starring Kevin Zegers, Bill Paxton, Charlotte Sullivan, Dru Viergever, Atticus Mitchell, John Tench, Lisa Berry, Julian Richings, and Laurence Fishburne. It was released in the year 2013.
The Colony is a post-apocalyptic science fiction film focusing a group of survivors who have lived in Colony 7 since the world’s temperature reached extreme temperatures due to non-stop snow. After receiving a distress signal from a nearby colony, a team of Colony 7 survivor go to check it out. When they arrive they encounter a murder scene, a less than forthcoming leader of the colony and a group of bloodthirsty cannibals.
All is not well in Colony 7, it would appear.
