About Alita: Battle Angel

Alita is a battle cyborg who is revived by Ido, a doctor, who realises that she actually has the soul of a teenager. Alita then sets out to learn about her past and find her true identity. Meanwhile, just like all good dystopian hellscapes, there’s the constant looming threat of augmented human-cyborgs and evil corporation to keep Alita busy.
Oblivion (2013)
Directed by Joseph Kosinski, Oblivion is a post-apocalyptic science fiction film starring Tom Cruise, Morgan Freeman, Olga Kurylenko, Andrea Riseborough, Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, and Melissa Leo. It was released in the year 2013.
Oblivion focuses on a lone maintenance technician who has almost completed his mission on an Earth completed decimated from an alien war. Completely alone, or so he thought, the maintenance tech discovers woman who survived when her space ship crashed into earth. Together, they do what they can to survive and along the way they discover the truth behind the war with the aliens.
Mortal Engines (2018)
Directed by Christian Rivers, Mortal Engines is a post-apocalyptic steampunk film starring Hera Hilmar, Robert Sheehan, Hugo Weaving, Jihae, Ronan Raftery, Leila George, Patrick Malahide, and Stephen Lang. It was released in the year 2018.
Mortal Engines is set more than a thousand years in the future in a post-apocalyptic world where these steampunk-looking gigantic mega cities known as “Predators” are mobile and spend their time looking to attack and consume other cities that are smaller than them for fuel and resources.
The city of London is on a rampage consuming all in its wake and apprentice historian Tom Natsworthy will do whatever he can to ensure no more innocents get hurt.
The Creator (2023)
Directed by Gareth Edwards, The Creator is a sci-fi action movie starring John David Washington, Gemma Chan, Ken Watanabe, Sturgill Simpson and Allison Janney. It was released in the year 2023.
Set in the year 2055, The Creator depicts a world where an US government created AI detonates a nuke over LA which leads to the entire western world banning all AI to prevent this ever happening again. However, governments in Southeast Asia ignore this and eventually a new robotic lifeform (a "simulant") called 'Alphie' is developed - meaning that Western Forces are going to try and track down Aphie to kill it. This movie questions what is real and what isn't when Alphie becomes self aware and starts to display human characteristics.
Future World (2018)
Directed by James Franco and Bruce Thierry Cheung, Future World is a sci-fi western movie starring James Franco, Suki Waterhouse, Jeffrey Wahlberg, Margarita Levieva, Snoop Dogg, Twin Shadow, Method Man, Lucy Liu and Milla Jovovich. It was released in the year 2018.
Future World is set in a post-apocalyptic wasteland where a Warlord raids a high-tech lab and reactivates an android girl named Ash. She gets caught up with a man called The Prince who's trying to find medicine to help his sick mother the Queen when the Warlord catches The Prince and forces him to take his forces back to the Prince's homeland, known as The Oasis, which is a paradise. Ash and The Prince then manage to escape but are hunted by the Warlord as they try to survive gladiatorial battles, motorbike gangs and rusty old prison cells.
Infinite (2021)
Directed by Antoine Fuqua, Infinite is a sci-fi action movie starring Mark Wahlberg, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sophie Cookson, Jason Mantzoukas, Rupert Friend, Toby Jones and Dylan O'Brien. It was released in the year 2021.
Infite follows a schizophrenic man named Evan McCauley who gets arrested after forging a katana for a local gangster. When a man at the police station claims they've known each other for centuries, a woman by the name of Nora busts in the room and helps him escape. Evan eventually learns that there are 500 forever-beings known as Infinites who can remember all their past leaves that are split into two groups: the Believers who want to make the world a better place and the Nihilists who want to destroy the world. It's a race against all odds as Evan learns he's part of the Believers and that they must recover a Egg-shaped doomsday weapon before the Nihilists can use it to destroy the world.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets (2017)
Directed by Luc Besson, Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets stars Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu and Rutger Hauer. It was released in the year 2017.
Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets is about a vast metropolis and home to species from a thousand planets. When this metropolis comes under threat by a dark force, Special operatives Valerian and Laureline must race to identify the marauding menace which may threaten the entire universe.
Monster Hunter (2020)
Written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, Monster Hunter is a monster film based on the video game of the same name, developed by Capcom. It stars Milla Jovovich, Tony Jaa, Clifford "T.I." Harris Jr., Meagan Good, Diego Boneta, Josh Helman, Jin Au-Yeung and Ron Perlman. It was released in the year 2020.
Monster Hunter follows a U.S. Army Ranger Captain, Natalie Artemis, who is pulled into a portal along with her team into a place called the New World. A fantasy-like alternate earth where humans and monsters co-exist. The Captain's team is wiped out and she is forced to learn the ways of the Monster Hunters in order to survive. Artemis eventually makes it home to earth but a large monster follows her and it begins to wreak havoc!
Ready Player One (2018)
Directed by Steven Spielberg, Ready Player One stars stars Tye Sheridan, Olivia Cooke, Ben Mendelsohn, Lena Waithe, T.J. Miller, Simon Pegg, and Mark Rylance. It was released in the year 2018.
Ready Player One focuses on a futuristic world where most of humanity uses a virtual reality simulation called The Oasis. However, it is run by an evil corporation who wants to profiteer from the players. The plot focuses on a teen orphan (played by Tye Sheridan) who discovers clues to a contest which promises the winner total control and ownership of The Oasis.
Edge of Tomorrow (2014)
Directed by Doug Liman, Edge of Tomorrow stars Tom Cruise, Emily Blunt, Bill Paxton, and Brendan Gleeson. It was released in the year 2014.
Edge of Tomorrow is about Major William Cage and his skirmish against a group of aliens that the human race is at war with. During this skirmish he’s exposed to some alien tech which causes him to relive every aspect of this war in some bizarre sci-fi version of this Groundhog Day story.
The Old Guard (2020)
Directed by Gina Prince-Bythewood, The Old Guard is a dark fantasy superhero film starring Charlize Theron, KiKi Layne, Marwan Kenzari, Luca Marinelli, Harry Melling, Veronica Ngo, Matthias Schoenaerts and Chiwetel Ejiofor. It was released in the year 2020.
The Old Guard is about a group of immortal warriors working as guns-for-hire who, whenever they are "killed", heal and regenerate. However, when they are set up to be killed so their regeneration can be filmed as proof, they soon find themselves embroiled in a plot by an evil pharmaceutical giant to capture them and harvest their DNA for study.
The Tomorrow War (2021)
Directed by Chris McKay, The Tomorrow War is a sci-fi action movie starring Chris Pratt, Yvonne Strahovski, J.K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson and Edwin Hodge. It was released in the year 2021.
The Tomorrow War follows biology teacher Dan Forester who is drafted by soldier from the year 2051 to fight in a future war against alien invaders known as The Whitespikes. When he is sent to the future along with the new recruits, many are killed when they are dropped to the wrong location, but he presses on eventually feeling like he's in over his head but doing whatever he can to survive and win the upcoming battle.
Resident Evil (2002)
Written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, Resident Evil is a sci-fi horror action movie starring Milla Jovovich, Michelle Rodriguez, Eric Mabius, James Purefoy, Martin Crewes and Colin Salmon. It was released in the year 2002.
Based on the video game series of the same name, Resident Evil is set underneath the fictional Raccoon City in a genetic research facility called the hive. A thief steals the T-Virus and contaminates the lab causing the AI security system "The Red Queen" to seal the lab and kill everyone inside. In response, a covert team of commandos is ordered to secure the Hive, bringing an amnesia-ridden and mysterious woman Alice, who lives in a facility above the research facility - along for the ride. What is meant to be a routine op for the team of commandos turns into a fight for their lives as they take on the genetically mutated creatures belong as well as the psychotic AI with a eerily haunting child's voice.
Ghost in the Shell (2017)
Directed by Rupert Sanders, Ghost in the Shell is a live-action cyberpunk movie based on the anime of the same name. It stars Scarlett Johansson, Takeshi Kitano, Michael Pitt, Pilou Asbæk, Chin Han and Juliette Binoche. It was released in the year 2017.
Ghost in the Shell is about a cyborg public-security agent, who hunts a mysterious hacker known as the Puppet Master. The story is set against a backdrop of a cyberpunk Japan where the lines between sentient and non-sentient technology is blurred. It’s no surprise that this is one of many anime’s that inspired elements of The Matrix.
Chaos Walking (2021)
Directed by Doug Liman, Chaos Walking stars Daisy Ridley, Tom Holland, Mads Mikkelsen, Demián Bichir, Cynthia Erivo, Nick Jonas, and David Oyelowo. It was released in the year 2021.
Chaos Walking follows a young man who lives in a dystopian world without women, where all living creatures can hear each other’s thoughts in streams of images, words and sounds, called “Noise”. Then when a woman crash-lands on the planet, he does everything he can to try and protect her from danger.
Elysium (2013)
Directed by Neill Blomkamp, Elysium stars Matt Damon, Jodie Foster, Sharlto Copley, Alice Braga, Diego Luna, Wagner Moura, and William Fichtner. It was released in the year 2013.
Elysium follows a futuristic earth which is overpopulated and disease ridden while the rich and 1%ers live on the space station called Elysium which orbits around the earth. With this plot point, Elysium explores many themes including classism, immigration and even healthcare.
