What is Leviathan?

Released in 2004 by Relapse Records, Leviathan is the second album by American heavy metal band, Mastodon. It drew widespread critical acclaim, most of which was incredibly positive, and catapulted the band into the popular underground music zeitgeist. Even achieving status of Album of the Year from industry leading magazines like Revolver, Kerrang! and Terrorizer.

Key tracks like "Iron Tusk" and "Blood & Thunder" received consistent airplay around this time which led to the band selling at least 106,000 copies by September 2006. "Iron Tusk" is specifically well regarded amongst avid fans thanks to its inclusion of Clutch lead singer Neil Fallon on the track. Just like "Aqua Dementia" for featuring ex-Neurosis lead-vocalist and guitarist Scott Kelly.

Leviathan is often cited for being one of the most important progressive metal albums of all time. Thanks to his melding of Progressive Metal, Sludge and Thrash. Three heavy-metal genres rarely cited as working so well together in tandem.
