With covers that traverse Lovecraftian style and action-packed influence, cover C is my pick as the clear winner and the one you should pick up!
The Devil’s Gate #1
Western horror isn’t a sub-genre that’s been largely explored. Though there have been entries that could be defined as such. I’m talking about movies like *The Good, The Bad and The Ugly* and *Django Unchained*.
It’s 1870. Welcome to Heaven's Gate, Arizona, a town controlled by a dangerous and enigmatic cult and right on the brink of collapse.
Enter John Glass, a mysterious outlaw hellbent on avenging the brutal death of his younger brother at the hands of a group of ex-Confederates.
His quest for vengeance leads him to Heaven's Gate, where the local sheriff - a man only known by the name Royal - does all he can to keep the community afloat and out of complete chaos. But that's easier said than done, considering the amount of influence the priest has over the townsfolk.
John arrives in town to discover that much something much deadlier than a handful of rotten Confederates is at play here. A dark, sinister secret lies in the air, thick like fog. While he attempts to track down his brother's killers, John forms a reluctant alliance with Royal and begins investigating whatever goes on behind the walls of the Church of the Sovereign Saint.
What John soon learns is that every man harbors secrets and that most are willing to kill to keep them hidden...
Written by Silas Dunn and CJ Patereau, The Devils Gate seeks to blend the worlds of Dead Redemption and The Last of Us. This world is resulting something darker than Jonah Hex, something more elaborate than The Preacher and something grittier than Ed Brubaker’s Pulp.
Combined with the bleak artwork of Gerald Von Stoddard and the sinful hellfire colors of Lorenzo Scaramella, The Devil’s Gate demands you walk into hell with them in this first issue where Covers A and B summon darkness incarnate!
Pulp Traps
Pulp Traps is a one-shot horror anthology of 4 unique horror tales made by José Cardenas and Frederik Hornung. It's a love letter to the pre-code horror comics and last century and stylistically looks as old and weathered as the type of comic book magazines that Warren Publishing were known for.
From a group of teens partying at an abandoned biscuit factory to a young charlatan who discovers a magic mirror that will give anything he wants. To a horde of demons feeling for their lives to four adults who perform an exorcism. It's the kind of pulpy horror fiction you'd expect from its namesake.
Unfortunately, there's no sight of a front cover on their Kickstarter campaign so you'll have to take the creators at their word that it's going to be a wild ride.
