“Nebülith plays very specific music, which is addressed to a narrow audience, those who love the intoxicating atmosphere of the 1960s and 1970s, or to those for whom the lysergic aura of standard stoner-doom representatives is insufficient. For me, it's the bomb. I would never have expected that this kind of crafting could go further than the recently emerging Italian brigades, who also compose psychedelic music, but not in such an extreme style as Nebülith.” - Apocalyptic Rites

Nebülith will release Feel Good Music for the End of the World Vol. 1 on August 23.

Just who or what is Nebülith?

Nebülith is the product of John Shaughnessy, a professional bassist, multi-instrumentalist, and engineer from Charlotte, NC.

As as kid, his tastes gravitated towards the heavy, groove-influenced rock of Black Sabbath, Zeppelin, King Crimson, and a heavy dose of funk. Later on, he embraced alternative music and proto-punk like The MC5 as well as next-gen stoner/Doom like Sleep and Monster Magnet.

While paying the bills playing jazz and show band gigs, he started a project called Space Force Alpha, with vocalist Omari Wilkerson. The duo released a single “Change The World” in 2019. The song featured John’s unique fretless piccolo bass playing - a combination of guitar, bass and electric cello, all recorded in John’s home production studio.

More demos were written for Space Force Alpha, with an eye toward making a full record - and then the pandemic hit, and the music business came to a complete halt. Faced with time on his hands and no band, John decided to make a solo record and do all the instruments and vocals himself. He figured that would be a good use of the time off and an audition tape for future production sessions. Having become a huge fan of the Riding Easy Brown Acid series, Shaughnessy figured the most fun thing to do would be to make a pseudo garage band record with the riffs he had lying around. He considered marketing it as a “lost”band from the 70s, and releasing it on reel-to-reel tape.

As “two weeks” turned into months, and the world started falling apart, the music and the message got progressively darker and angrier. He started pushing his studio gear to increasing extremes. Multiple versions of songs ensued, each heavier than the last.

Eventually, he was left with a huge pile of recordings to sift through. Sorting through this audio hoarder house and finding a direction took the better part of a year. In the course of the recording, the dystopian Nebülith character was developed as a clear departure from his normal gig life.

The great thing is, as Nebülith he was able to do and say things that he would not normally be able to in a professional Gig context. In Nebülith, the project found its voice.

Feel Good Music For The End Of The World Vol. 1 is the result of four years of work, experimentation, sweat, and pain.
