About Annie Wilkes
Annie Wilkes (played by Kathy Bates) is the obsessive superfan in the 1987 Stephen King novel, Misery, and in the 1990 movie of the same name. While she might seem sweet and simple at first, don't let that fool you, she's as conniving and insane as they come.
When famed author Paul Sheldon is in a car crash, Annie Wilkes who is a fan of his books, discovers him and brings him to her remote home to recuperate. However, it's her discovery of Paul's manuscript, which he had in the car with him and which details how he plans to kill off Annie's favourite character, Misery, in the next Paul. Enraged, she's determined to hold him captive until he rewrites the book.
Throughout the ordeal, Annie breaks both of Paul's legs, kills a Sheriff investigating Paul's disappearance and shoots Paul with a revolver. All before getting smashed in the head with a typewriter and then being bashed by a metal doorstop.
Misery is a great example of how fandom can take the idea of being someone's "number 1 fan" too far. Despite all this, there's some great moments throughout the film and the book. One-liners which actress Kathy Bates nails in the film version of the story. Here's hoping you enjoy them.
Crazy Annie Wilkes Quotes
“I know I left my scrapbook out. I can imagine what you might be thinking of me. But you see, Paul, it's all okay. Last night it came so clear. I realized you just need more time. Eventually, you'll come to accept the idea of being here. Paul, do you know about the early days at the Kimberly diamond mines? Do you know what they did to the Native workers who stole diamonds? Don't worry, they didn't kill them. That would be like junking your Mercedes just because it had a broken spring. No, if they caught them, they had to make sure they could go on working, but they also had to make sure they could never run away. The operation was called hobbling.” - Annie Wilkes
